I think when this topic was discussed in couple years back, someone said the Chrysler historian said they were silver. From a post by Lifer in 2008: "The engine, transmission, and transfer case would have been a "semi-semi-gloss" silver."

Lifer.
Do you remember if the shifter rods under the truck should be silver also?
Thanks

I'm not sure on that one! My guess would be black, same as the shift levers and undercarriage, but that's all it would be...a guess.

The shifters in the cab were originally black, but usually got painted to match the body color of the truck shortly after being assigned to a unit (and definately before the next IG inspection ;) ).

Thanks Lifer.........I just learned something new today. I was just starting to clean up the shifters for paint and did notice that black was one of the colors under the OD.

Am I right in thinking the drive shafts where black? If so where the flanges on the transfer case and tranny black or silver or on painted?
Thanks,
Gerry

Yes, the driveshafts were usually black. The transmissions and transfer cases were usually painted as fully assembled units, so their flanges would have been silver to start with. Again, they would have been repainted eventually once they had been in service a while. This usually occurred when it was necessary to remove them for overhaul.

It all depends on what period in the life of the truck you want to depict... 80 years from now when Im gone, or have one marble circlingthe drain, some kid will restore mine to 2010 vintage, and he will wonder "hmm, was the Transmission black, or grey?" And only I will know the correct answer...
