Which type of gas can carrier?

Post by refit1701 »

There are two types I see on MV's; a solid bottom one and a "vented" one. Would a '53 have a solid one? I've seen both types on 37's.

It was missing on my truck, I borrowed one from another M37 that sat near to where mine had expired.

Don't believe I've seen another kind.

Same here, I've never seen any carrier other than the type in the picture Carter posted.

This past weekend, at the Iola show, I noticed a different type whereas the corners were slotted as if a strap was run through them. I didn't take that close a look at them to see if they were mfr marked or different in other features. I've also seen the solid bottom ones before but not mounted on anything, usually lying loose.

I've noticed some carriers are heavier than others. I presume the lighter gauge are commercial or newer mfr. The newer mil-spec looking ones have the mfr's CAGE codes and PNs on the bottom right front.

The one shown the in above photo is what I would call an early non vented type. The ones I have seen lately are "vented" with slots cut around the corner edge, presumably for water to drain. I have seen both kinds on our trucks.

I just wondered when they changed types.

This weekend I looked closer at mine and I do have both types, until reading your post I hadn't really compared them. Thinking about it made me look closer at them.
