Not going into gear

Post by Carmen »

About three weeks ago I took my stock M37 out for a little spin and filled it up. I parked it like I always do - inside of course. Well today I wanted to go for a little ride and..... It started right up, like it always does. But It would not let me put it into gear. The cluch seems to me to be be ok but Ican not get it into gear. If I try to force it I will only break some teeth in the transmission.

What happen????

Sorry - my brain is a bit frazzled, so I'm forgetting all of the names of the parts involved! Here's my over-simplified "anything-with-gears-is-a-box-of-magic" aphasic thought:

When you let out the clutch with the tranny in neutral, you should be able to hear the tranny it engage & start to spin. When you push in the clutch, the tranny should go quiet. This effect is even more pronounced if you have a PTO. If there is no change when you push in the clutch, then it is possible your pressure plate (?) is rusted/stuck to your clutch disk (?). I had the same thing happen to me a few times - same circumstances - and got mine unstuck (before it was rebuilt) by repeatedly pushing the clutch in & letting it out rapidly. Others have used a pry bar.

Try dancing on your clutch pedal & see if whatever is stuck will let go. You might also want to get a second opinion.

Fist question to be asked will it go into gear not running and if so will it start in gear and move the vehicle forward (or reverse) this maybe a way to free the clutch if it is stuck if this is not it the throw out bearing may have failed or the clutch fork broke. Remove the dust cover from the bell housing and inspect with alight and have someone operate the clutch pedal with the engine not running and you should be able to see if there are any broken parts.

I am able to get it into gear with the engine off. But when I try to strat it the truck wants to move forward. I will take off the cover later today and see if all is ok. When I rebuilt this truck I put all new parts in the clutch - new bearing, fork, preasure blate, cable everthing. I put less than a 1,000 miles on it in a years. and my truck is only ten years old, parts should have lasted longer than that.

Thanks

It is not uncommon for the clutch disc to stick to the flywheel and/or the pressure plate, especially when a vehicle sits for long periods. Try pull starting the truck in 2nd or 3rd and varying engine torque and braking to break it loose.

I did as suggested. I was able to get it into gear when the engine was not running so when I started it I quess I must have broken it loose. This is the first time that this has evern happen to me and I hope that it is the last time. Thanks for all yhou help I was really worried that I had a very major problem.

Glad it worked out. Amazing feeling of relief when it finally works itself loose, huh? :)
