Fording Exhaust makeup

Post by snowdad »

Does anyone know if the fording exhaust is a double wall construction to prevent burns? If so, is it possible to fabricate one? I have an exhaust shop near me that can make different exhaust components, just don't have a very good high resolution picture of one.

The fording kit exhust is just an extension of the exhust. No double walling, just straight pipe. If you want something like that you will have to have it made special. Hopefully someone will post a good picture of an installed fording kit.

Certainly looks like a double wall mid section to me.

The fording exhaust pipe is a small tube inside a larger tube as a heat shield. The photo shows this well.

Just so you know, it is not a good idea to install a fording kit as a permaent installation, some feel it looks cool, but actually it's a killer on the engine. The air cleaner canister should not be installed permanently either. The air cleaner has screen all the way around the circumference where air flows in, when the cleaner is placed inside the canister, intake is chocked down to a 2.5" tube. Nowhere near the flow without the canister. The small diameter and long length of the exhaust stack creates significant back pressure within the engine. These combinations cause lousy fuel economy, a rich running fuel system, and when used as a permanent installation, is a major factor with burned valves, blown head gaskets, etc. The fording kit was never meant to be a permanent installation, that's why there were brackets designed for storing the components during normal operation. The kit is simply designed to help get vehicle occupants out of a tough spot when no other way exist.

Thanks to all especially to Charles for his explaination of how the pressure is increased inside the crankcase. I thought it would eventually blow the headgasket if left on permanently not to mention decrease the already lousy fuel economy! Does anyone have measurements including the inner and outer diameter pipes? Charles, where was the shroud and intake pipe stored when not in use? Have looked everywhere and used the search without luck.
