A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE

Post by 8543bob »

Good morning, I got the rebuilt (lower end) engine in truck yesterday. Everything hooked up and ready for initial start; bummer, it started to rain, and I left the windows in the house open. Had to go, so today I will attempt to start her up. Here is what the topic is about: I took the engine out of the truck awhile ago, should have taken pics. The mind is not what it used to be, or what Ilike to think it was. There are two brackets, bent several time at different angles. I think they attach to the front eng mount, but I cant seem to get them in the right position to line up with anything. Any help with positioning these brackets would be greatly appreciated. A picture would be great. Thanks Bob

Bob... Is this one of the Brackets ? If it is, It goes from the front motor mount to the bottom of the radiator mounting frame. This one is for the left side, There's one for the right side also....

There's a good illustration in the ORD 9 for them.

WOW!! Great responses. Those are the support pieces I am talking about.
Glad I id not mount the radiator yet. In fact I hve it at a shop getting pressure tested and cleaned out. I turned the ignition switch on this AM hit the start and after a few cranks she went off, no smoke, no strange noises. Shut it down real quick without the radiator or water/anitfreeze in the system. It was good, hear her come to file again. THANK YOU ALL for the info and pics. Bob

Congrats on bringing the old girl back to life and hearing her run. It is always exciting to get to that point in the rebuild. Where do you work on your M is it a drive from your house. I just have a carport to work under sounds and looks like you got a cool shop.

Good Morning,
I have access to a boat yard, out in the open; but its got all the right stuff, fork lifts, engine stands, presses, a full service marine shop, but it works for me. I have rebuilt detroit diesel, outboard and gas engines there. I have repowered boats there, that have gone from gas to diesel. The only draw back is; its outside work, so weather has got to be on your side.
So now I got most of the truck back together, minus the radiator and things forward of it. The nail biting is behind me.
Again thanks to all

Hi Sal. AND ALL Yep, that would be me, or maybe one of those 747's out of JFK. The radiator shop called me yesterday afternoon; said they found two small leaks. They think the core might be original, 52, because the tubes just flaked apart trying to do the repairs. So they are going to re-core it. How does $500 sound for the re-coring?? I told them to go ahead; i dont want to chance an overheat on the rebuild. When the diesel goes in I wont have any worries. The re-coring slows me down a bit. Wont be ready till Wednesday. I will have it on the road for july 4. HOPEFULLY!!

Hi Bob,

This is what Charles Talbert of M Series Rebuild had to say on the cost of radiators and recores in another thread on radiators.

"Recore jobs go around $400-$450 these days, new reproduction copper/brass (original equipment type) radiators are around $1,000, New all aluminum with extreme heavy duty core, around $1,550. These are the facts current day, watch buying so called good take-outs, you can easily get fooled, I wouldn't suggest buying one before it is checked out by a reputable radiator shop."

Sounds like you are in the right price range. Hope you make the July 4th date !! :D
