WINDSHIELD RUBBER
GOOD AFTERNOON, I TOOK BOTH FRONT WINDSHIELDS OFF AND THEY ARE ON MY BENCH. I AM GOING TO REPLACE THE THREE SIDED RUBBER. I TRIED GETTING THE OLD STUFF OUT OF THE TRACK, IT HAS PROBABLY BEEN THERE SINCE 1952. IT IS VERY BRITTLE AND WONT COME OUT , IT BREAKES OFF AT THE FRAME. I'M THINKING OF USING A MINI GRINDER WITH A THIN CUT OFF WHEEL TO GET THE REMAINDER OUT OF THE TRACK. YOUR THOUGHTS?? ONCE ITS OUT I PLAN ON USING DISH SOAP TO LUBRICATE AND SLIDE IT IN OR PRESS IT IN?? YOUR THOUGHTS??

I don't think the cut-off wheel is a very good idea, myself. Too much can go wrong too quickly! Once you have all the "big pieces" off, I'd suggest applying some liquid dish soap and scraping the rest out with a skinny screwdriver blade. Slower, yes. More work, yes. Safer, yes (if you don't get in a hurry). My dad used to tell me that nothing screws up a perfect job more than getting in a hurry to get it done. It took me another 15 or 20 years to figure out that he was right!

I GOT THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDSHIELD DONE. I TRIED SMALL SCREW DRIVERS, DENTAL PICS, AND A SHAFT LOG PIC. ALL TO NO AVAIL. TRYING TO PRY THE OLD HARD RUBBER, I WAS AFRAID OF BENDING THE RAIL. I HAD TO GO THE MINI GRINDER ROUTE. I PUT A CUT OFF WHEEL ON THE MACHINE THAT JUST FIT BETWEEN THE RAILS AND LET IT FLY. IT ATE THE RUBBER W/O A PROBLEM. WHEN I SAW A SPARK OR TWO I MOVE ON. WORKED GREAT. THE LEFT OVER RUBBER THAT WAS IN THE GROVES JUST FELL OUT. GETTING THE NEW STUFF BACK IN TOOK A BIT MORE TIME. BUT # ONE IS DONE. THANKS FOR THE INPUT.

HI SAL, I TOOK THE WINDSHIELDS, FRAME AND GLASS OUT TO REPLACE THE THREE SIDED RUBBER WEATHER STRIPPING AROUND THE FRAME. NOT EASY BUT # 1 IS DONE. IT WAS HARDER GETTING THE NEW RUBBERS IN, USED LOTS OF DISH SOAP AND A 3" PPAINT SCRAPPER TO PRESS IT BETWEEN THE RAILS OF THE FRAME. I HAD TWO BOLTS SANP OFF, THE ONES THAT HOLD THE HINGE TO THE FRAME. THE ONLY SEALEANT I SEE UNDER THE HINGE IS A GASKET LIKE MATERIAL. I REPLACED IT WITH SILICONE. HAD TO DRILL AND RE-TAP THE BROKEN BOLTS.

www.midwestmil.com ; John has the windscreen rubbers as well as the gasket for the base of the entire windscreen. BTW, I would repair/paint each panel before installing any rubber/glass, also I would use a nylon glass spoon/tool?

I had the same problem with the hinge screws Bob, I replaced them with stainless steel ones. As for the weather striping, I figured that all I needed to do was to put some gasket material under the hinge. But when I laid the window into the windshield frame I noticed there was a space in the upper corners (see pictures) The old weather striping on the window frame was almost all gone so I didn't have any idea what should be there! How does yours match-up ?

Your Missing Somethin'
Another rubber gasket goes across the top of either panel. It should/would fill that void. Let's see if this picture shows what I'm talking about?

I have a store bought one as well as a rebuilt one that I did myself.
I could be wrong.....but, it looks to me like your gasket was either too short or trimmed to soon?

WHEN I PRESSED IN THE NEW RUBBERS; AND NEARED THE TOP I NOTICED I MIGHT NEED A BIT MORE OF THE FLAP TO GO ABOVE THE RAILS. SO I CUT THE PART OF THE RUBBER THAT GETS PRESSED IN SHORTER THAN THE FLAP. NOW THE FLAP RUNS UP HIGHER THAN THE GLASS FRAME AND COVERS THOSE GAPS

Do you see the rubber, it's mounted w/the hinge, as I recall?
After each panel is installed, you are supposed to crush the end of each hinge, I did the inside of each one.

There are 2 short strips that should be incorporated to fill the voids at the top corners. They slip in each side below the hinge rail. Neither the top strips nor the side strips are designed to fill that void.
