Entire Bed Removal- Where is it attached to the frame?

Post by KenInGA »

As the title suggests, I am removing the bed from my truck. Not just the bed floor, but the whole darn thing. I want to make sure I removed all of the bolts and whatnot attaching the bed to the chassis.

Can anyone describe where the bolts are? I can't find a diagram of them in any of the manuals- although I may be looking in the wrong place. I don't want to be tugging on a chain-hoist out in the barn trying to figure out why on earth the damned thing wont move...

Thanks,
ken

Forward of each one, on the outside corner is a tough one, the screw head is there, but the captive nut is hidden from view/access. I am taking one apart now.

I got that one, it wasn't too hard. Fortunately they all broke rather easily, and I just slipped a offset wrench up under the cab and got it right on th enut.

There are just the 6 bolts holding the bed assembly to the frame. Four are in the bed at the rear and wheelwell areas (look like the tops of carriage bolts) and the other two are under the front corners. Make sure you disconnect your gas filler tube/lines and any wires coming through the front wall (if you have the radio power harness). The bed will come off as a whole unit this way and you can disassemble it off the truck, like in a warm garage.

There is an illustration of the bolt locations in figure 41 of TM9-8031-2 if you have that one.

I took mine off late this last summer. What an experience but I think it is the BEST way to get into everything behind the cab to do any decent refurbish work.

Thank you all. With about 6 hours of work today, the bed came right off after a series of adjustments on the straps we were lifting it with. Pictures to follow.
