rear diff. pinion shaft play

Post by Gerry »

I have both axles out and removed the drive shaft flange to change the seal. Is there supposed to be a lot of play? Other then the seal and flange I dont see what would stop up and down play.
Thanks,
Gerry

Gerry,

If your flange is off then you will be able to move the shaft somewhat as the flange when installed & torqued properly seats the taper roller bearings on the pinion and prevents your "up and down& all around" play. You should not be able to move the pinion shaft all around when the flange is installed and properly tightened. This would indicate wear of the bearings. If you removed it from the shaft, DO NOT FORGET TO RE-INSTALL THE SPLINED WASHER BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE SEAL  I learned this the hard way the first time I did one of these and had to eat a seal  [/i]
