Tub and bed mounting material choices?

Post by nivek »

Gents,

Other than OEM/Mil-spec replacement parts made in rubber, is there anything anyone has used to mount sheet goods to frames of their trucks they prefer?

Nothing wrong with the rubber parts, however I live in desert, rubber tends to loose its vitality quickly in the heat/cold cycles we have here in NE Oregon.

I would be interested in hearing and seeing others solutions.

I am not sure, but wasn't the original material canvas belting that was rubberized? Kevin what about canvas belting & silicone? Maybe Sid or John Bizal will log-on to this one?

I am making mine out of a piece of coveyor belting. It is reenforced with clth and pretty tough. I plan to use a hole saw to cut rounds out of the sheet. Then drill a center hole. It looks very simlilar to what I removed. I have a 6 foot x 12"piece and would be happy to send you a sample if you wish to go this route. :)

Gents,

Belting was my "next second best guess" for making the mounts. Seen good pictures where others have fabbed up some decent parts.

What I've seen out here in sun-dried farmlandia is that belting takes a heckova beating, rubber portions tend to wear, then crack, 'go away' long before they actually wear out.

Beastie and I took Old Blue and Rusty Red apart, all the mounts were tired with age and time. What I am looking for is something that will last and be road grime/oil/road gunk/dirt proof.

If belting worked for your projects and sleds then I'll re-look over it, see what is findable out here.

Thnx!

Neoprene works well and holds up to the elements better than rubber. Finding it in the right thickness might be problematic, though, if you're out in the middle of nowhere.

Polyurethane is what most folks use as replacements on modern day trucks. You can get them in many configurations. There are several companys that offer these. Energy Suspension is a big one.

I believe that Midwest military sell the pads in a complete kit. Or your could buy sheet from Mcmaster- carr. If I remember right there are two different thicknesses

reinforced neophreme or nitrile, heck old mud flaps will hold up to about anything. The "cab/tub" insulater/mounts were belting ( looked like old cotton fire hose strips)
