Story in the making...

Post by Montanaorbust »

Maybe a week or two ago I post a message, titled "How did your first M37 make you feel"? Men, thanks for all the great stories.. I wish I could relate to some of the secret missions, involving the M37. Or how this truck brought you closer to loved ones, or how much damn fun some, if not all of you are having with these trucks. But, for me.. My story is just starting. I dont know a great deal about the history of my truck. It was used as a fire truck for some time. But, you want to talk about a straight truck. Everything works great. Everything.. well, not the horn. But come on, a horn. Like i said, everything works.. I do have one idea, about the little dents, in the bumber and other random places.. I swear they look like bullets have hit there. Is that possible? Im sure many of you have had the same thought, " If this truck could talk". Going on about the truck.. it seems to have a leaky rear seal. Looks like a pain to change, think i will just keep the oil to her. Me the wife and kid took the M37 on a cruise, off the beaten paths of highway 11, She did great. I can honestly say, the original flathead 6 loves 45mph. After the excitment wore off for a three year old boy, Maybe an hour. we could see his eyes getting heavy, to the tune of the transfor case winding. We just smiled. Oh, let me mention, im a big man. 6'3'' 250lbs. im I just going to have to adapt to my knee hitting the stering wheel every time i disengage the clutch? Or is there something the could be done? Besides take the door off. If not, thats ok.. A small price to pay. Once again thanks for the warm welcome.

Great post and again welcome aboard. Your dings in the truck are most likely the result of it being used to push/haul most anything. I have a ton on mine I am currently patching on my front bed panel. It looks like some body slammed the brakes on with a load of rebar in the bed.
Is your seat all the way back? I am 6'2 220lbs and have plenty of room. Maybe its the extra inch height you carry

Man the seat is back, i just have to wedge my knee inbetween the door and steering wheel, forget disengaging the clutch while turning, no way. i'll study the situation. As for the dents, maybe. this truck has not been restored, nor has it been abused. But, i suppose you would have to know your stuff, to really understand what has been done to the truck over the last sixty years. When I figure out how to load pics, ill put some up. with that being said, i dont think, well these random dents, all have the same trajectory, or imprint. hell, all the dents are the same.. ok i'm not worried about the history of the dents, new business. Is there any way to find out where the truck has been? run some number, or something? whats the plug, that screws off in front of the drivers door for? I know its hot.. Radio equip, or something..

Plug

Post by Nickathome »

The plug is for a slave cable to run various equipment, that of which I'm not real familiar unfortunately.....

I consider the dings and dents character marks. And my truck is loaded with them. I did putty over one that I had to drill and pull out using the slide hammer on, but the rest are going to stay there. Personally I'm glad my truck can't talk. I'd rather not hear the horror stories that my truck obviously went through in its previous life. Its treated like a creampuff in my garage. At most it'll complain of boredom if it could talk, while under my ownership. But hey, it can't complain too much, its got a roof over its head, is never driven in the rain, nor is driven hard at all. Its really got no reason to complain as I've done some pretty good cosmetic surgery since I've owned it. I'm no mechanic but it sure looks a hell of alot better than its previous owner/owners could attest to.

Nick, same with mine... It'll be a "mall crawler" as the hardcore mudding and rock crawling guys like to call pampered 4x4s. I figure it's an "old man" at this point in it's life, and, it's entitled to a slow weekend cruise in sunny weather and no snow, rain, or bullets to dodge.

I love just cruising around town with mine (or, I did anyways, before I tore it down to refurb it). Watching jaws drop, and little kids tug on their dads pants and yell "Dad look at that truck!" is a lot of fun.

Montana, be careful with that leaking seal, as they degrade, they leak faster and faster. I wrecked a rear axle that way, so, keep a very watchful eye on it if you're content to let it "mark its territory".
