Rear main seal

Post by N1VSM »

For those of you shade tree mechanics, how easy is it to replace the rear main seal? Is this something you need specialized tools, or will the standard toolbox goodies suffice?

I did this one a couple of years ago with the engine in the truck-can do as long as you're prepared to drop the oil pan. Mine was two halves plus two h-shaped pieces that fit under the rear main cap-you'll have a gusher if those are omitted....

Also, no special tools other than a torque wrench....

Don't forget a tube of top grade silicone. Very little is needed & your new seal instruction sheet will show you where it needs to go. I wouldn't use the blue RTV, poor quality.
