Leaking Oil Pan Gasket Replaced.

Had an olds 455 in a jetboat that -always- leaked from the valve covers around the screws. Drove my completely batty! I went as far as to locate screws that had built in o-rings to seal them. That didn't work either! Finally one day I looked really close and lo-and-behold the metal was worn away where the screw head had been rubbing on the vertical sides of the valve covers. Every screw had a little half moon hole leaking oil. Swapped out for a new set of valve covers and the problem was solved.

Another thought on the leak.
The Rollin' Roadblock would push oil out the rear main and to a lesser extent the front seal when driving. (To the tune of a quart every 200 miles.) Didn't drip sitting. Cured the pumping when I redid the PCV system. Now that the block is being scavenged, the oil s staying inside.
Just another thing to check.

I cleaned the PCV valve but found it was like new inside so reinstalled it. The front and rear seals are not leaking, just the pan gaskets from that black silicone crap. Will order another tomorrow and do the job again but with Hylomar this time, no more silicone for me but I always enjoy a properly done silicone boob job.

It's a shit that it didn't work Carter, hopefully it's all good with the Hylomar and gasket repair....

Check one more time for any trickle-down possibility from above ( especially the front ). It can get into the pan rail from a secluded source and run around the pan rail. In doing so, you would sware its a pan gasket leak. My guess is that you have NOT LOST THE RIGHT STUFF! The black silicone is a great sealant if applied evenly to clean dry surfaces.

I will do a thorough inspection before I do anything else, thanks for bringing this possibility to my attention.

Clean thoroughly with brake cleaner or somesuch. (Take the needed precautions re:eyes, skin, paint) when it is clean and dry, spray some aerosol talc powder around the gaskets. Drive it a mile and crawl under and look. Any oil leaks will show like a silver dollar in a black goats fanny. Short duration helps eliminate windage.

The truck has been sitting due to the overwhelming back-log of work I have accomplished during the Spring and Summer seasons, I have now begun to do the truck work and should have a report soon.

Sounds good, I have Hylomar but I was told to use Permatex Ultra Copper RTV on it. I hope to have my new gasket in maybe Monday from Midwest.

Rtv is for bathtubs. It isn't even allowed in our shop. Cause more troubles than it cures.
