Being that I work with electrical items every day,I see way too much exposed copper in your pics. I would pick up some heat shrink tubing to correct the issues you have there. Yes, disconnect your battery( or batteries ) to prevent arcing and shorting.

That's a tall order. The best thing is to go to the TMs for wiring. Look at TM 9-2320-212-20 pg 2-17

Pretty much ditto what Brett said. To dry it I used a air hose then a heat gun. That got it good and dry.

Want to see what the color of you truck was, remove the black out drive light. That rubber gasket, if not removed by a previous owner will uncover paint that hasn't seen light since just before the delivery date.
