Re: Insignia's

DCook,
I can't offer any help, but I'd say display them! Even if some are not totally correct the conversations around that would make it worth it. What a special collection!!!!

Re: MasterPro GL 4 Gear Oil

delta31, I'm using it in my winch :). For the transmission it's worth the wait for Redline MT90. It improves the shifting greatly and I've had no leakage issue if the transmission is not overfilled. If overfilled it will pump a bit out the input shaft as it finds its level. I do not fill to the lowe...

Time to build another 230 or two...

Hi Crew,
I'll be looking for rings, pistons, rod bearings, main bearings at the minimum. If you need to reduce your stash shot me a message and maybe I can help :D .

At this point it looks like .020" & .030" pistons and rings and .020" rods. The mains will be checked today.

Re: Lu4 winch worm shaft bearing back lash

delta31,
It's not really a backlash adjustment, more of an endplay adjustment, think of it like a wheel bearing. Set it w/o the gear installed and record the # of gaskets for final assembly. There's some discrepancies regarding the actual setting. I set mine up on the tight side.

Re: 1954 M37 rebuild thread

Bob,
I'll miss seeing your M37 project adventures on the site. I hope the new owner chooses to participate and that you drop by occasionally. What are you thinking about for a new project?

Re: Winch Drum Bushing Pins

The drum of my winch has pins in both bushings. I didn't need to replace the bushings, but if I did I would probably use bearing and sleeve retainer instead of the pins. The issue I see with using the pins is that you'd likely have to drill & ream another hole in the bushing/drum for the new pin...

Re: SC M37

It may be a good idea to find a shop that can shot peen them properly. It's cheap insurance.

Re: Winch Gaskets

"The Right Stuff" works great, until you have to remove it. We had a 230 with an oil pan that was glued on with the stuff and we could lift the engine with the pan and no hardware in it!!!!! It was a bear to get the pan off and a real bear to remove the sealant/adhesive. If you want to ens...

Re: Winch Gaskets

I used Loctite 518 and spray Permatex Copper Spray-a-Gasket along with Loctite 242 or 271 on all the fasteners.

Re: Aluminum and Brass Reaction

The gear is brass, so I doubt it. I suspect that area of the handle's shaft rusts up due to exposure to condensation/humidity. It's well over the oil level and if the winch is used infrequently it won't have much in the way of protection from any oil. I painted mine with graphite and intend to cycle...

Re: LU 4 Winch Clutch Shaft Plug

The spacer goes under the plug, it's just a thin piece of tube that goes in the plug's bore. It holds the plug off the floor of the bore (and off the clutch shaft) and allows the plug to be deformed to seal. I didn't measure mine but I'd guess is was a mild steel tube around 1.240 OD, .05 Wall and a...

Re: LU 4 Winch Clutch Shaft Plug

Hal,
Did you include the spacer that goes under the plug? I ask, because ours went missing in the parts washer for a while and lead to a bit of head scratching.
