Bert, I haven't had time yet, but I will check to see if that gap is just a stepped recess.
I checked. It is. The races are fully seated with a 0.09" gap. I was making a mountain out of a molehill.

Re: LU-4 Pinion Gear Races
What I'm trying to say is that the base of the cups is not seated. There is about a 3/32" gap between the bottom of the cups and the seat. That means the cups are floating so that rotating the pinion under load will drive one of the cups home, thereby increasing the pinion end play by roughly a...

Re: Rim Question
It looks safe to me. If the pits bother you cosmetically, after you get the rust removed, fill the worst of them with jb weld and sand smooth.

LU-4 Pinion Gear Races
My races and bearings are in good shape, but neither race is fully seated. Both races lack about 3/32 inch being fully seated. That seems very strange to me. Any idea what might be going on there?

Re: Saving from scrap
You will need the longer and correct length civilian pilotshaft and the longer pilotshaft housing that match the V8 bell housing and clutch (see photo below). They go in the front of the military transmission replacing the short military pilotshaft and pilotshaft housing. All else remains stock. I m...

Re: Saving from scrap
Why will you need a civilian M37 transmission? (I've owned these trucks for over 50 years, and I didn't realize there was such a thing). There are however, two versions of the M37 transmission. You can tell them apart by the shifter housing. For me, the transmission was the least of my worries. I us...

Re: Saving from scrap
The 318 has a little over twice the power of the stock engine. That's not enough - it's a heavy truck. Before you try to mount a civilian transmission, check the location of the mounting bolt holes for the 4wd and low range levers and the location of the PTO housing. Keep in mind that the jackshaft ...

Re: Saving from scrap
Why would you want a civilian transmission?
I kept the military transmission, as being the easy solution.
Do you not have one?
Speaking from experience, the 318 is not enough engine for the 37. Lacking in both power and torque.

Re: Saving from scrap
You'll need a Dodge V8 bellhousing. No engine/transmission adapter needed. You will have to relocate one transmission bolt hole in the bell housing. The stock clutch linkage is mechanical, not hydraulic. You will need a longer civilian pilotshaft and housing, and/or a modified pilotshaft bushing to ...

Re: Saving from scrap
I would suggest the 360 (or larger) with the stock M37 transmission and longer civilian pilotshaft & housing or modified pilot bushing to compensate for short military pilotshaft & housing. I put a 318 in my 37 back in the late 60's, but due to the 318's anemic power, replaced it with a big ...

Re: Opinions wanted
I'll double check. Edit - thread I.D. mikes 0.470 inch and 1/2-13 tap fits 7 of the 8 holes, but the 8th one is just a bit loose. 5/8 tap is way to big to even enter the hole, much less the threads. 2nd Edit -- LU-4 Manual calls for 9/16-12 double ended studs 2-5/16 long Dorman 675-046 is 9/16-12 an...

Re: Opinions wanted
Not interested in Lock-tite.
What would be wrong with the 17/32-13x1/2-20 double ended stud?
(seems like the easy way)
