carb adjustments

Wes;

It worked great!. Truck idles much better but more importantly, it starts much easier when hot than it has in years. Apparently the adjustments to the idle and throttle cable assembly made a big impact.

Appreciate it!

Carb adjusting

Wes;
I did read through those pages and they will help with linkages etc.. I was more concerned with the idle mixture and idle speed screws which it says I need to use a vacuum gauge. Is there a starting point to set these at?
Thanks

Carb adjusting

I know this topic has been broached many times in the past but in doing a search I'm having a tough time finding a simple picture/document that explains what adjustment screws do what. I just finished rebuilding my carb and would like make sure the settings are close. I did find some pictures of the...

Is that something I can check myself by turning the rear wheels on jackstands and placing some type of gauge next to the drive shaft?

Rear Dif vibration?

I finally got the new tires on which has helped the vibration/rough riding quite a bit. Still notice a fairly strong vibration when driving over 35 mph on level ground or under mild accelleration. Not present under hard accelleration or going up a hill. I did notice while adjusting the brakes that w...

Loose steering

Good advice Gary. I took it all apart yesterday and was able to adjust the steering box(both worm gear and backlash). It was quite obvious that the linkage needed grease badly and adjustment as well.

Steering adjustments

My steering feels quite sloppy so I pulled out the old manual and read up on adjustments of the worm bearings and also backlash. My steering feels very loose and also once in a while I get what I call a "death wobble". Since I'm not sure exactly what "backlash" is or what the wor...

Good point on the valve stems. That would have been a deal breaker!

Mounting new Tires

I'm finally mounting me new NDT tires and would like to know if I need tubes or any other parts for this. My buddy who does large trucks and has a cage will be assisting so nobody looses a head. Any tricks or recomendations on these 56 year old rims?
Thanks :?:

Fuel sending unit

I installed a new unit from John at Midwest and noticed that when the tank was full it only read 1/2. I removed the unit and checked the float with the ignition on and it read perfect. I noticed while reinstalling the scews that once the screws got tight the reading suddenly went down to 1/2 again. ...

Solved it!

Tried manually turning the fan while holding my thumb over the spark plug hole on cylinder #1 and no pressure at all. Removed head and found blown head gasket, replaced and it runs better than ever!!! 8)

Charles, Boy, are you thorough! Reminds me of John down at Midwest Military. Your right on most accounts that I should check all of these things. Points and condensor are new and set at .020. Gas is new as is the fuel tank. Carb was rebuilt last year with kit from John. Timing was an estimate when I...

Thanks Charles for the help! Can you explain a little bit more about vacuum problems. I had been driving my truck around town that day and we stopped for lunch. When I went to start it again it had to be with the throttle wide open. Once it started it was very rough and continues to be like that now...

Both plugs appear fouled. I'm going to test the cylinder pressure and see if its a head gasket. What should the pressure be? This engine was rebuilt a couple of years ago(not by me though).
Thanks for the suggestions. :shock:
