Drain and store the gas! Let project sit overnight to reduce vapors (the only thing that can ignite).
Don't be tempted to use a shop vac to remove flamable liquids.

The front bushing in the starter takes all the side load from the starter pinion when it is engaged with the ring gear. It is prone to wear out and allows the armature to drag in side the stator. I had the same problem - couldn't get the timing right. it's a six cylinder 4 stroke engine, which travels 2 revolutions before #1 fires again. 2 revs is 720 degrees divided by 6 cylinders = 120 deg of crank rotation per firing pulse. The distributor runs by camshaft gear at half speed of the crank,...
