Re: Douglas connectors

Sand a bit off the ends of the butt connectors. Any large grit will do. The brown or white plastic types are the best. The black hard rubber (I think it's rubber, could be resin) type tend to be very brittle. I usually chuck them when I come across them. Sand and check the fit of the shells. Repeat ...

Idler arm bushing replacement

Hi all, I've been away for some time. The truck is running great...except when the throw-out bearing grenaded yesterday, but that's another story. I need to replace the bushing in the sterring idler arm, and I'd like to do it in situ . I see that the manual has a special puller (of course). I was th...

Re: An unusual problem...

Sorry for the slow response. Busy getting ready for the big weekend. As to the problem: The heck of it is that it quit doing it. I put 30 miles on it on twisty-turny hilly roads, and it running just fine. Gotta love those problems that fix themselves! I'm sure it will present itself during the parad...

Re: Gas Tank Sending Unit

Sal,

I had the identical issue after I had mothballed my rig for a couple of years. The gauge didn't work when I ressurected it. I think the float flooded with the first fill.

An unusual problem...

Hi all, A buddy of mine is having difficulty with his truck; It quits when he goes around corners! He has clean new gas, adds alcohol, and has installed a petcock on the carb to drain any water that may be in there. He is currently using a poly gas jug in lieu of the tank until he can get a proper t...

Re: Steering gear backlash adjustment? *UPDATED*

I finally had a chance to get at the gearbox this past Sunday. I took three full turns on the adjusting screw to get most of the slop out (I left a couple of degrees in there; thanks Lifer). I never did feel a high spot, but the truck sure behaves a lot better! I reckon it will hold until I can get ...

Re: Steering gear backlash adjustment?

Thanks to all for your excellent input! Our roads here have some pretty deep tire ruts in the pavement. I have to ride the ridges while going down the road while in town. Sometimes the truck will just take off in one direction, or the other, if I fall off the ridge. It can be entertaining. This is w...

Re: Steering gear backlash adjustment?

Hi Lifer! Okay, I'll try the adjustment and see what I get. Everything but the box is pretty tight. I've replaced the tie rods ends recently (within the last 5K miles, anyway), and the drag link connections feel solid. I replaced the king pin bearings with rollers when I started getting the death wo...

Steering gear backlash adjustment? *UPDATED*

Hi all,

What does that adjustment do exactly? I have a lot of sector/worrm play, will that take any of that up, or just make the steering stiffer?

Thanks!

Thanks Charles. I saw some copper washers in their catalog. Is Rockwell B65 soft enough?

Master cylinder cover plate gasketing

Hi all, I swapped my M/C, but I don't like the new cover plate. I'm going to use an older cover that will accept my pressure bleeder. There are 1/4-inch copper washers under the bolts. I can't find them locally. Can I get away with annealing the old ones for re-use? Can I use Permatex thread sealer ...

Okay Charles, it's a front release plug. Thanks, got it. I'm off to the welding shop for some 1/0. Cuz: Hi Wes! Do you have an e-copy of that manual anywhere? Wow! Yep, that was poorly written. I should have said "lengthen the jeep's ground cable, as well ". I also have an M38A1. I'm worki...

Hi Charles, I'm using an NOS plug, and the cable length actually looks as though it's meant for M37, so I won't need to install a new cable. I think I'll try running it up the top of the frame rail. There may already be some holes for the Adel clamps that are under the mud. I'll keep hunting. Good t...

Slave recepticle lead routing?

Hi all, How is the hot lead of the slave recepticle routed? Mine was cut off at the back of the plug, so I have nothing to go from. I have found the hole in the frame for the ground, but just about every path I see to the starter looks as though it will interfere with the various clutch or brake lin...
