Any chance of finding a decent replacement 1st/2nd gear for a NP420? If so where please. Removed the NP420 from my 46 years static M37. But before that I drained the oil. To my surprise it came out looking fantastic...then we got to the bottom where the stream turned to light brown syrupy ick. So out it comes. Removed the top of the case to have a look see. Found the 1st/2nd gear to be a bit rough, the edges of the individual teeth which lead the engagement with the reverse gear are chewed up. Here is a pic. If I cant find a replacement perhaps a bit of hand stoning to remove the sharp edges is advisable. Desperate I realize as I think I am through the case hardening on some of the edges. Sigh.

seems likely that someone is parting one out...if not i think i have a couple that i might part out but the parts are stored about six hours drive away from where i'm at, plus taking the parts out.

AB Linn-I got a full gear set from them a few years back.

Ebay. There is a fellow selling a lot of NOS gears right now. (Not ABLinn) I've been stockpiling from both suppliers.

I think you might have bought the last one at Surplus City. I checked today, and Chuck said that they are out of stock on the 7057632 sliding gear for the late style M37 transmission (the NP420).

If anyone has one of these available NOS, or comes across one, I'm looking to buy one.

i have at least one, if not two, spare transmissions i will be driving past in the next couple weeks, which likely have useable gears in them. what's the easiest way to identify the transmission number? is it cast into it somewhere?

The easiest way I know of is to look at the shift tower. If it has two pins for the shifter cane ball to pivot on, then it's the later NP420. If it only has one pivot pin then it's the earlier 88950. Both are four speeds, and both are close in size and appearance.

Notice that there are also differences in the shape of the shift tower, and in details about the case casting, such as the location of the fill plug.

Very few of the parts between these two transmissions are interchangeable. For example, the first & second sliding gear in the 88950 will not fit in the NP420.

Isaac, here's what the NP420 will look like with the top cover removed. The first & second sliding gear 7057632 is the one on the right (towards the rear of the case), labeled "B" in the photo.

The teeth wear will be on the back side of the teeth, i.e. towards the rear of the case.
