how do i know if a truck i just purchased has dot 3 or silicone fluid

dot 5 is purple

Sometimes the color is hard to see.
Put some water in a small glass container.
Add a little of the brake fluid.
Swish/stir/shake it around, in other words mix it up.
If it blends with the water, it's DOT 3/4.
If it forms little beads at the bottom of the glass and won't mix with the water, it's silicone based.
