wanting to read up on differential rebuild, as well as winch rebuild. I know there are a couple of technical manuals that cover these (the diff, less so) but i am not sure which manuals they are.

The four basic manuals are:

I much prefer the paper versions over the CD ones, as the CD scans are missing or have garbled text. For the paper copies, I like the ones sold by Canham & Sons Books (http://www.themanualguys.com): he prints them on standard 8-1/2 x 11 paper, and then will either three-hole punch or comb bind them. Both work well for use out in the shop.

TM 9-2520-232-35 New Process NP420 Transmission (If you have a truck with the later NP420 transmission)

This forum is one of the best sources of info. Using the search function (and being creative with the search terms) will unearth a great deal of knowledge and experience, especially from some of the professionals who post here. I've been doing that since I joined, saving and printing out the applicable topics that apply to whatever I'm working on, and now have six large binders full of information to supplement (or substitute for) the original military manuals.

That's the one I use the most, too. It's sort of the heavy repair (depot level) for everything except the engine, clutch, NP420 transmission, or electrical.

The parts catalog is good not only for listing everything that should be there, but in what order things go together.

For your LU4 winch and front knuckle rebuilds, go to this site, and look through the list. Each section has a link to more detailed information. I found this link, which seems to be the correct manual, although it must be a copy of the CD version as most of the text has been computerized. The advantage is that it is almost entirely searchable by text (using CTRL+F) and the disadvantage, as has been noted, is that some of the fractions show up as % signs. The TM number doesn't seem to match what you supplied but did give me a much better picture of what can be expected during a diff rebuild and some of the tools that would be necessary.

Great articles at the moosecreek site! hydroboost brakes might be in the near future. i want to add power steering anyway, and with the parts from that link and write-up, adding a brake booster will only add a few hundred dollars.
