Tail Gate question

I have noticed that most all of the tail gates have been modified along the right and left side lip with a piece of strap metal. Is that a field repair or recall type of thing? or dose anyone know when those repairs were made? Most of the welds are not that good.I am just curious. :?:

That's a Dept of the Army MWO and is listed in the Ahl restoration guide. I want to say it was dated 1967 but I can check and post the actuals this afternoon.

T,

I do not have a picture, but Billy Pilgrim is selling a tail gate in the swap meet section and his pictures clearly show the repairs that were made some time ago. The repair is made on the outside of the tailgate at both the right and left sides. In fact his pictures reminded me to ask this question. Thank you Gary for Your info. This is one of those things I had never asked about and when I first bought my M37 I thought some shade tree welder had done the work and then I started noticing that everyone of the tail gates I have seen had this repair and the welds look like chicken crap.It is intresting to learn about.

The tailgates are so flexible that any sort of load on them and they fold up. I actually found an unwelded one for my truck when I replaced the tailgate, but I welded the straps in, just so that it looked "original" to me.

I've had a few people ask me why I didnt take them off, to which I always reply that I actually added them per the Army service manual, and I always get puzzled looks.

Interesting. I looked at my tailgate earlier and mine does not have the added metal. Not sure of the history, might be a repro?

That's in David Ahl's M37 Restoration Guide, and I purchased it from David himself some years ago for $19.99. I won't plunge into the many opinions of the guide but it's helped me out a number of times when I needed a quick answer or spec.
