Defroster Tube

Can someone tell me the diameter of the knockout panel on the dash that is next to the glove box? I believe it was used for installing the defroster tube. This area was hacked up on my truck so I'm going to repair it to the point that I will be able to install a heater and defroster system at a later time. If anyone has a photo of an original defroster tube installed that will show me how much of the area behind the tube is actually exposed that would help too. I'd hate to spend alot of time on the area if you won't see it after the tube is installed.

Just measured mine. 4 and 1/8 " diameter.
Hope that helps.

I'm going to clean up the damage, build a flush patch with the correct size hole for the defroster tube. I'll weld it in flush to complete the repair. The rusty white box under the dash was the heater.

Do you plan to use the original type defroster sheetmetal duct? The one that is bolted on? If so, I suggest getting that first. Looking at your picture I believe it will cover up entirely the jagged mess you have, and will save you that bit of work. I have one I haven't installed yet so can't say for sure though. If you had one you could test fit it.

Glenn,

I'll take a measurment of the damage and post a photo. I don't have an original tube but it is in the plans to install an original heater. I think I'll still have to do some sort of repair so I can attach the duct.

Here hold my beer, I'll make that speaker fit. Yeah, you might as well go ahead and patch it right since now is the perfect time to do it.

Perhaps a dumb question, but how does one get to the window locks with the defrost tube on? Does it hinge downward at all? Or is there enough room to get hand between it and the window?
