Today did some more re-wiring of ignition system, cleaning up a few connections.

Re-checked plug gap. Checked order of plug wires in distributor, and spent a considerable amount of time playing with the points to try and get a better spark.

My friend Jim helped me, and today we confirmed, I have spark, but it is EXTREMELY weak. Didn't know what else to do (not able to tow out of mud pit backyard to driveway to try and pop start yet), so finally ordered new plug wires which will be here early next week

The hunt continues to the issue...thank you to everyone for their responses and feedback so far!

I haven't gotten a chance to put my new plug wires on yet...spring time is really, really busy for work...

My mechanic told me to double, and triple check my grounds...

So that'd be just the battery ground, frame ground, resister ground correct?

Should I make a jumper from the negative side of the distributor to ground to try and test it?

Finally got the truck to the shop a few days ago, and I wanted to update this thread on what the findings were.

It appears that the issue was a combination of:

A: condensation in the fuel system, which I had suspected and attempted to remedy, apparently I was unsuccessful. This is embarassing

B: bad points, which I changed, so plus one there

C: a engine grounding issue, ground needed to be cleaned a bit and re-attached.

Truck is running great now...having them do a little bit of body work for me and tune up the carb while its down there.


This thread has increased my knowledge of the workings of this truck ten-fold, I appreciate all the responses which I received! Definitely will help my trouble shooting in the future on other trucks...hope it helped others as well!
