Oil pump prime?

A blurb in the Vintage Power Wagons catalog stated that the oil pump must be primed (by immersing in motor oil) before installation. I may have overlooked it, but I don't recall the TM requiring such. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Thank you.

Always better to have the pump pumping oil from the start so you don't scorch any internals waiting for the oil pressure to build.

I made an oil system pressure charger for new engine startup. An old refrigerant container. Filled with the oil charge and pressurized with air. Connect to the oil gallery and fill the engine by running the oil through all the passages and let it drain to the pan. Then crank it up.

You can also pop the cover off the pump (beware of the o-ring seal!) and pack the pump with Vaseline to prime it. I usually use a large syringe and really force that jelly into the nooks and crannies of the pump.
