Does anyone have or know the dimensions of the go / no-go gauge tool in the TRICO vacuum wiper motor tool kit 41-K-280? A photo of the gauge is shown on page 343 of TM 9-8031-2:



The tool appears to have two or three slightly different circumferences, which are inserted into the motor housing. If the inside of the housing is worn too much from the paddle sweeping back and forth, the gauge will go in past the largest circumference of the tool.

I've collected a number of the Trico S-583-1 wiper motors, but they're all in need of rebuilding, and I need to separate the usable motor housings from the ones that are too far worn to bother with.

I'm interested in acquiring the tool or the entire tool kit if anyone has one they want to part with. Thanks!

I recall an old magazine article that had the snuff on rebuilding the wiper motors. I'll have to dig it up as it's an old Street Rodder mag-I collected these in the early 1970's when I was in high school (and yeah, I still have them!). Might take me some time but I'll find it and let you know if it has the tool/dimensions, etc.

These old motors are fairly simple in design and operation, and although most people prefer the modern electric wipers, I like the old vacuum motors, at least on a vintage vehicle.

If I can at least get the dimensions of the go-no go sections of the tool, I can make a replacement (once my lathe is back together). Shouldn't be too difficult to make an extra or two if someone else should want one.

Finally got to this-it was in the June '78 issue of Street Rodder. Unfortunately it does not have the gauge info you seek but provides detailed instructions for rebuilding the Trico unit.

I thought we were going to see an article in the local Draper newspaper about a man who was lost in a cave-in of a massive amount of old magazines in his house. Searchers are still looking for signs of life.

You ain't kidding Rick! I guess I collected more than I thought, starting in May '72 (1st Issue) until mid '79. All kinds of good "old school" info based on the technology at the time.

I did that with Four Wheeler, 4 Wheel and Off Road and National Geographic. I had them from the late 60's to present. Just this past winter I filled probably 8-9 recycle bins with all of the old magazines. I really hoped to find a home for the Geographics but Millennials do not read print. Nobody wanted them. I even called Vietnam vets and they were supposed to pick them up. Twice I put them out for pick up and twice they did not show and I had to bring in 15 boxes of National Geographics. I called one more time and they said they were not sure if they could get anyone out that week, they went in the bins. I REALLY hated to do that. I have probably a hundred good books in addition to a hundred college books. I used to work at a college and I grabbed the old physics and math books they were tossing figuring I would teach myself advanced math and physics. That is not going to happen so I guess they are going to end up in the bin also.

My wife has gotten past my rat-packing of this stuff since some of it I had before we married!
My mags will likely go in a package deal with my M37 when the time comes; I hope that's still a long way off.
