Hey everyone- it's finally summer here in Vermont, so I hope you all are also now enjoying your summer (last year I think our summer was on a Thursday)!
Anyway, so I'm recommissioning a 51 M37 and I'm in the market for some tires. Currently it has some McCreary super lug tires, but as far as I can tell, they are no longer made.
I intend to keep the 16" Budd wheels, and this truck will get used 50% on and off road. No extreme use, but as you all know the military tires are best at, um, not showing the enemy which direction your rig was going by looking at the tracks (?) I dunno, very slow operation in mud with tires aired down (?)
In any case, this subject has come up often over the years, and I've read a lot of good opinionated discussion here and elsewhere about it. For my 1/4 trucks I have had good luck with civilian tires, as there is a big selection, I have often wanted to put new modern rubber on my dueces, but way too much $ for what use they get, and what I am finding now as I search for tires for my M37, is that the load ratings for many 16" tires that are 36+" OD are insufficient for a 3 ton M37.
Once upon a time, there were various Michelin tires in 900 or 1100 16 but they seem to have mostly disappeared these days.
Any and all ideas are welcome on this-

the Michelins are still out there but to me way too much money. my favorite is the STA 10.50 x 16 chevron tread. its a bias tire but I have never had problems with new bias. they get a bad rep from people who expect 40 year old tires to ride well and blame the fact they were bias. the 10.50 is about 38 tall so you get a little more top end. There is a Yellow Sea Michelin knock off at a good price that comes in 9.00.

Do you know the load rating?

http://www.stausaonline.com/tires/sta-ndcc/ I think they made a mistake calling it a D/8 ply tire. the weight rating at 3865 suggests its really a 10 ply or E rated.

here is a link to universal tire at 309. I bet if you call STA they can tell you who their dealers are. I think the last guy I know to buy a set only paid about 240 per tire.

I have 2 McCreary super lugs on budd wheels that are surplus to my needs as I
am going tubeless with the disk brake conversion. They have about 100 miles on them.

When you do your disk brake modification, are you changing the hubs etc, or swapping out the complete axle(s)?

The tires are in my shed, I will try and get some pixs for you.

I thought that they were now made under the STA brand?

I've got Power King Super Tractions which are pretty decent, but I've found the super lugs to be far superior.
