PTO question

My PTO has a slow leak a drop or two a day but it has been dripping all winter. I have a few questions:
1) I have no immediate need to use it so is there any risk of damage as long as I do not engage the PTO?
2) Does the PTO have its own oil resevoir (sp).
3) How do I check the fluid level in the PTO and add to it if it is low?
4) What type of oil does it need?
My plan is to have a new gasket set instaled but my guy is 1.5 hours away and I have been putting this off for a few months unitl I have a reason to get up to him.

The PTO, runs in the same oil(gear oil) as the Trans.
So by checking and filling the trans. you mantain fluid in the PTO.
Some advise 50wt. engine oil,but I still use gear oil SAE 85/140wt.
If you don't know what's already in it you should drain and refill with your choice so you know.
It's most likely 90wt gear oil,but who knows for sure what someone used.

Can you determine where the leak is coming from? I understand that the shifter shaft is notorious for leaking. Take a look - if the surface of the shaft (outside the PTO) is rusty or pitted, that is likely to be your problem.

Yes it slooks like the shifter shaft is leaking I bought a seal kit from VPW and thought my guy had installed it. I will keep an eye on the trans fluid level. How hard are the seals to replace?

I am almsot embarrased to ask but after getting under the trck today I am confused on how to check the level and fill it with gear oil. Thanks

"your guy" may actually have installed the seals you bought, but if the shaft is pitted it will cut into the seal relatively quickly and you'll end up with the sort of leak you mentioned.

The filler plug for the transmission is near the top of the tranny housing on the passenger side towards the back. If you pull the floor panel, you'll find it.
The drain plug is at the bottom, rear of the tranny housing. The PTO and the tranny share fluid - top off the tranny & you'll be good to go.

I think I found the filler hole but mine is on the drivers side near the top I put my pinkie finger in and I cannot find any oil so tomorrow I will get some SAE 85/140wt gear oil and fill it up. THanks
