Right now the LU winch is dismounted from the M 37/42 truck I have bought, with the bumper extensions and such also off the truck. I am arranging shipping for the 1200 or so miles from near Lincoln, NE, to near Charlotte, NC. I called the auto transport company, cost is about $1400, but they insist everything be out of the bed of the truck. I can fit all the OEM spares the owner has now in the bed in my SUV to bring back, but I don't have a way to remount the winch, besides, I want to de-rust and prime and paint the front frame parts before i mount the winch. I also don't really have time to put it all back together before I get it shipped back to SC.

So if the only way I can get the winch and "parts" back to SC is to put them in my SUV, is it the opinion of this forum that two men, me being one of them, can pick up the winch and put it in my SUV?

Does it still have the frame extensions bolted to the truck or the winch or separate?

I think I would bolt the winch back on with minimum bolts for the ride home.
Leave the bumpers off if wanted.
It's not that big a deal to mount.

Your looking at 1200 mile ride so I believe it might be worth the effort.

Unless you have room in the SUV.

The winch and bumpers weigh about 300/350 lbs I think Can't really remember.
I know it's aluminum as compared to the cast iron MU2 on the Power Wagon.

Someone will chime in I'm sure and correct my weights.

tom, thanks for the suggestion. I was not aware that I could bolt the winch just to the frame, and put the bumper extensions in my SUV and bring them back with me, and then detail and then remount all of the parts when clean and ready.

yes, I see that now. I don't have to bolt up everything, just the frame extensions, which now have the bumpers bolted to the extensions. then the winch to those. Here is a picture of what I have now in the bed of the truck, the boxes are full of spares, I haven't looked thru them yet. I would have to de-rust the bolts before using them. Or make it easy, and just bring some new ones out for the trip back to SC.

Since the winch bolts directly to the frame, it could be installed for your transport without the extensions and bumpers.

I know I've moved my LU-4 winch (without cable) by myself, so the winch itself can't weigh too much. Lifting it into the back of your SUV would be easier (and safer) with two people, however. You could unwind the cable from the drum (with leather gloves on!) if that would make it easier to lift. And if the cable is worn or frayed, you might be farther ahead to leave it for scrap, and buy new cable in NC, unless you don't intend to use the winch and just want some cable on the drum for appearance.

The weight with cable is about 250-two guys can manage it if you have strong backs.

Ok thanks, but I think I will just have to buy one of those engine hoists. Have finalized arrangements on getting it back to SC, should have here in about two weeks. But then I am getting a new knee, and so won't be able to drive it for maybe two months. But I will put up some more pictures when I have it back here.
