I've been having trouble getting fuel to the carb. Here's the typical sequence. I go out to try and get the M/37 started. Doesn't fire. I then brake the fuel line at the carb and try to bring up fuel using the primer lever. Nothing but a sucking sound. I then removed the fuel tank cap and went back to the lever. The sound changed almost immediately followed by fuel. Any suggestions/comments? Thank you.

exactly what Just Me said. Especially if your fuel tank is full or near full. also keep an eye on your oil and oil level to be sure the fuel pump diaphragm hasn't gone bad and is dumping fuel into the crank case.

At the engine compartment or on the tank top?

First of all, Welcome to the site.

Look at the inside of your fuel cap, if there is a fording valve in it make sure that you turn it so that it is open to vent.

There were a series of early vent less caps that were in use too. When you open the cap do you hear the air rush into the fuel tank?

The cap vent has been in the open position. Yesterday I disconnected the vent line at the top of the gas tank (it connects to the air cleaner elbow). Today after a couple of pumps with the primer it started right up. Ran it out on the streets. No problem with restart. Tomorrow will be the test!
