Tool for turning engine by hand with winch installed

Today i made a tool for turning the engine over with a breaker bar, when the winch is installed. There's probably another way to do it but this was cheap and quick to make and works very well. I turn it with a 1-1/8" socket on an 18" breaker bar. I needed it for setting the valve clearances.

It's just short enough to slip behind the winch and through the hole in the radiator, but still long enough to reach the engine cranking nut

Good idea Isaac, I am going to make one to use for the same purpose since my valves have become a little noisy.

But, you are SUPPOSED to adjust the valves hot with the engine RUNNING! Which is an interesting chore in itself. I adjust them as carefully as I could last time. Let the engine cool over night and recorded each valve clearance. Now I adjust it cold to those settings And. Save burning my knuckles on the exhaust.

I'll get measurements of it later today. Very little work involved if you start with the right length of bolt :)

Instead of setting them hot, I referred to Charles' numbers and let someone else's burned knuckles pay the price instead of my own. I can't even see how it's possible to set them with a hot manifold in the way. It took me more than 30 minutes, with a cold engine and no manifold in the way.

Looking forward to making one of these also. Hoping to check my valves soon

the bolt is 3/4" diameter 7" long from the tip to under the head, the "pin" on the end is a 5/15 bolt exactly 1 5/16" long. if it's any longer, it won't fit through the hole.

it's turned with a 1 1/8" socket, which only just BARELY fits in the radiator hole. you won't fit a thick wall impact socket.

In the past I have adjusted valves while hot and running and been burned most every time, once very badly. As Isaac noted using numbers provided by Charles with the engine cold has worked very well and will do the same next time.

American ingenuity !! Great ! Thanks Isaac.
