Hi Guys,

I guess I haven't looked when I go to meets, so humor me here. The jumper cable that connects to the slave connector on the lower left cowl (just ahead of the driver's door) that allows you to jump start other M-Series vehicles is what I'm interested in. Did these cables come in different lengths? Are they readily available? I know I've seen the later single pin style, but the older dual pin connector types I don't recall seeing. What do they usually sell for? I hate calling John at Midwest and VPW just to ask questions........their time is money and I don't want to waste it. Besides, that's what forums are for, right? I assume having one of these cables would come in handy when you're hanging around with other MVs.....or maybe not? Do you guys all carry one in your truck? What do you guys think?

I have the old 2 pin style receptacle and I made up my own jumper cables. I used a piece of 3/8 copper tubing crimped onto the cable and it fits tight in the holes in the receptacle and have regular spring type connectors on the other end. My truck is converted to 12V so I wouldn't need to plug into a 24V, so it works just like regular jumper cables but a lot handier than accessing the battery under the seat.

The used ones I've seen at swap meets are around 10 feet long and sell for around $100. I think I managed to get mine for $60 or $70, but that was 4-5 years ago.

Bob, I have the old style slave cable that fits my '53 and got it off ebay a few years ago for $80. Its about 16' long and will reach around vehicles parked side by side. I also have the Nato single pin adapter but have never needed to use it yet. Most MVs I run into are as old as mine or don't have the slave receptacle any more. I think there are variety of lengths but what is out there now, I can't say. These cables were used for more than just slaving from one vehicle to another. Some generator sets, and other APUs have the slave port and could be connect for starting or to charge others batteries. I'm not as familiar with US military uses but I'm sure there are many.

They have gotten very pricey recently (around here) We have them on all of our M's and several different cables. Each vehicle carries one. (And the NATO adapters) I even put a receptacle on my large battery charger to make life easier.

I purchased a 25' long NATO single pin slave cable set and use the 2 pin adaptors for the older M Series trucks. This has worked out well several times for myself and other club members.

So I looked around a bit and I'm confused. The cables I find have female connectors on both ends! When you use the jumper cable is it supposed to have 2 male ends (meaning the end has 2 pins sticking out that go into the socket at the rear of the driver's side fender slave port).........or do they use separate pins that plug into both the slave port and the jumper cable female ends? What gives?

If the slave cable is going to plug into the port on the lower left side of the cowl on your M37...

All of the ones I've seen or bought have the same two-pin male plug on both ends, which makes sense since the pre-NATO plug trucks all have a two-pin, female socket.

I also have the two pin one pin NATO adapters in each of our MVs.

The cables were made in different lengths for different applications. Like power from a gen trailer to a commo shelter etc. Larger trucks got longer cables and so on. Find a cable that works in your price range and get it. Also the nato connector cable many of them came with an adapter to hook to the older GI two pin connectors. So that a CUCV could slave a M151 or an M35A2 could slave a HMMWV etc.

Ok, I got one at Aberdeen this morning. It's 11 feet long and HEAVY! There were tons of the single pin NATO cables, but I didn't see any other 2 pin cables besides the one I bought. It looks unused and set me back $40. I didn't see any adapters, but I'm not entirely sure what they look like.

Bob, $40 sounds like a decent price for that cable.
