got quotes for both of these cleaning methods and cost about the same ,if anyone has tried one or both and which they think is better etc

Hmmmm.................I guess nobody ever asked their engine builder how they cleaned their block? Bottom line is both work, but to remove rust with ultrasonic cleaning you have to use the right solvent. I would expect any decent engine builder to know how to clean a dirty engine block, but you can always ask to see one at his shop.........all the ones he working on should be clean. Look around and see what he's working on. If you notice some blocks still have paint or grime on them you're not standing in a quality shop. Not saying block cleaning isn't important.........but you'd hope even the average engine builder could get THAT right.

I have always liked the tradition hot tank lye bath especially on older blocks. The ones we deal with at the shop are usually pushing 70 years old or so. We install coolant filters on our rebuilds and even after a good hot tank and flush you would be amazed at what is still in the water jackets

I'm surprised that anyone still has a caustic tank. Around here, I couldn't find a shop that had one. Something about the EPA.

Mine was done with a Sunnen thermal cleaner, which is a three-step process: baking, media blasting, and then tumbling.
