There are 12 volt starters for M37 on Ebay, New not cheap but look good ,anyone have or used one ? looking at getting one if i ever get to getting my M37 up and running again

I have one on my big block El Camino. Not the exact same brand, mine was made by Tilton........but those gear reduction starters do what they claim. Never had any problem with it. Some have cranking time restrictions on them, not sure about the one on Ebay. But you can burn up any starter by abusing it. I'm assuming your truck has been converted to 12 volts, no?

I don't have specific part numbers, but...............Dodge changed over it's civilian cars to 12V in 1956 and continued to use the 230 flathead until 1959 (1960 in trucks)..........so you should be able to tell the parts guy you want a 12V starter for a Dodge car 1956 to 1959 that had the 230 engine and you should be good to go.

My truck is still 24 volt ,i was tossing up the practicality of completely converting it to 12 volt, as the 24 volt parts for the M37 you cannot get here in Australia, when it was running years ago i inadvertently, when connecting the battery leads touched the wrong terminal which Terminated the regulator ,which is the sealed version and took a while to get fixed ,if you were in the middle of no where and this happened i would be up Sh...ts creek in a barbed wire canoe ,i too old for walking home done it enough times in the past .

Understood. Actually converting everything over to 12V is a little more involved than most think........your talking regulator, distributor, breakers, all the light bulbs, senders and gauges, starter, horn.........pretty much everything the electrical system touches. The guy on Ebay selling the starter you mentioned also sells the 12V generator conversion as well. So it's certainly not impossible, and discussed on here lots of times.

I retained my 24V instruments in the conversion to 12V. Nothing 12v was suitable for me, so the originals remained.

the stock 24 volt one is to slow to slow to get my truck running
