LU4 Safety Brake Drum issue

I am cleaning up this winch I got off a parts truck. The safety brake drum housing was broken and held on by a covering plate and 4 long bolts. When I took it off, I found this. Can anyone tell me what's going on here and what I might need to do to correct it?

It looks like it was set too tightly and resulted in a very hot brake, melting the works.

I've also seen this happen when the brake band in installed in the wrong direction.

Nothing to do but replace the missing stuff.

Thanks for the info. I have a cover, but it doesn't fit over the drum and that other piece that looks like a collar with broken flanges -- has the whole assembly walked out of the housing too far?

Just what *is* that piece around the brake drum and is it supposed to look like that? If not, what do I do about it?

What else is missing besides the cover and the brake band?

It looks like the worm has pushed out due to overloading so disassembly & repair is indicated.

There will be a tension spring and some locking hardware there as well.

Get a copy of the manual to see the correct arrangement.

The picture on page 456 of TM9-8031-2 shows that chewed up piece to be "W" Retainer, bearing, worm housing, assy-CC-1501142
Yours is now junk and you are going to need to fully dismantle that side of the winch to check everything else out. Doesn't bode well for the worm and worm gear.

You have a broken front bearing retainer. This is very typical, and is most often caused from using a shear pin that is too hard, that does not break before damage occurs. When the pin doesn't break, the next thing that happens is the aluminum components holding the worm gear in the proper position as related to the drum shaft gear get more stress than they will stand up to. This is exactly what has happened in your case. Actually, you can be happy, looks like only the bearing retainer has given up instead of the gear housing.
