The throttle linkage on my truck was worn so badly, full throttle on the pedal was only translating to about 1/4 throttle at the carb. Decided to address that today. Ordered a new bell crank, stud, cross shaft, and cross shaft bracket, but when i started looking at it the rod from the cross shaft to the bell crank was worn pretty bad as well.

here you can see how far gone the cross shaft was


The NOS cross shaft from vpw wasn't drilled for the link that pins onto the end of it. I clamped the old shaft in the vice on the mill and set it up with end stops to locate the hole the correct distance from the end, and at the correct angle with respect to the bend in the other end.


The cross shaft to bellcrank linkage was pretty worn as well, you can see how the end has a big notch in it compared to the one i'm making.

Not going to paint it right now, if i ever rebuild it i'll paint it up nice. The spring stopper was turned from 5/8" mild steel rod, rather than just a washer. I wanted a nice fit on the rod so it could be silver soldered.

Found this stuff in the machine shop, seemed fitting to lubricate all of the pivot points with it

Thanks! I'll get more photos as it all goes back together. The bell crank and stud are both pretty severely worn as well. I don't have a copy of the lube procedure... I wonder if it was standard procedure to grease all of the linkage pivot points periodically? Or if they were just meant to be replaced while the engine was out for rebuild

Makes me want to check my linkages for excessive wear. I don't think I have taken a good look at them since I bought the truck six years ago

Just FYI on those shafts with the spring......ABLinn on Ebay sells NOS ones for a buck or two without the spring.....if you want to avoid making it from scratch.

well, that would have been the easy way! I can't seem to find him on ebay though...maybe i'm using the wrong search terms. and i didn't see the exact shaft for sale from vpw or mwm. i'm sure it's there and i just missed it. didn't realize i needed it when i ordered parts though, and then i didn't want to wait a week for shipping

PS The WC uses the same shaft, except it's straight. Just add the slight bend and they're identical.......if you happen to have a WC shaft laying around.
