One method is to soak all the connections soapy water, start the engine, and look for bubbles to appear. My first guess is that you have a leaking manifold gasket. (Leaks in the pipe joints should be fairly easy to spot.) With a tight exhaust system and a good muffler, your neighbors shouldn't be bothered at all. It will never be as quiet as a new Cadillac, but it will be quieter than (for example) a lawn mower.

Thank You Lifer, But will it be quiter than my oxy-propane .50 caliber reenactment machine gun? Well, I have something even LARGER, yes, a 13.2MM Hotchkiss Anti Aircraft cannon ! But since 911, we are discouraged from mounting our "props" on our vehicles while in the parades , at least in New York City. I will test my exhaust system and see what it is. Peter

I usually take some flexible fuel line, place one end near (not in!!) my ear and go hunting for the leak using the other end as a probe, you'll soon hear where it is coming from, you can also buy an automotove stethescope that has the fitting on the end for a metal probe or a tube for diagnosing all manner of faults.

We soap'd the joints and put a rag in the tailpipe to increase the back pressure (not totally blocking the opening)and turned it over.

Of course, you could attempt the Long Island method of putting your lips over the tailpipe and blowing!!! Eitherway, you'll see the "tiny bubbles".

KNATTRASS ! Where do you get these ideas about Long Islanders ? Now let's be reasonable, The real Long island method is to pressurize the tailpipe, say with propane; acetalyne is even better . Then leak test the exhaust using a match...works every time , (if you survive )
