Exhaust Tailpipe Tip

Hi Guys,

I keep seeing this short angle cut exhaust tailpipe tip for sale by folks, but don't see it listed in the ORD 9 or in any pics in my manuals. Was this short angle tipped pipe used on the B1 M37? Anybody know why it was incorporated? Maybe too many fumes in the bed of the truck......although I don't see how a 6" extension of the tailpipe would really fix that. Just wondering when it was introduced and why.

thanks,
bob

Bob:

You will find the listing for #2990-040-1953 listed in the TM 9-2320-212-20P, page 37, Fig #13. 20 P book is dated 28/March/1972. Note usable on Code as to what truck the part is used on.

I've seen a few M37s w/o them at shows, presumably because the deep water fording exhaust bolts to that flange. I do run the exhaust tip on mine.

Generally this short extension is used to keep the exhaust (with its associated acids) from rotting out the underside of the truck. The exhaust also contains water vapor, so the area under the tool box on the right side can have corrosion issues if the exhaust is not directed clear of the vehicle.

This is why all exhaust pipes should extend slightly beyond the vehicle.

Believe it was used on the ambulance version. I run one on my truck.

I made my own using a section larger diameter. exhaust. pipe welded to an old flange I saved from a dead muffler, if anyone is interested I'll get a pic tomorrow. The 2 reproduction ones I bought rusted out at the welds.

I didn't originally have mine installed until someone pointed out that the paint near the pipe was distressed and the tire was very hot.

T,

I was just poking thru the VPW online catalog and they have them for $10.95 or so.
Just FYI as they don't show up on Ebay with any regularity.
