I have to replace the oil seal on the back of the transfer case behind the parking brake drum. Any ideas of how to remove the drum? Removed cotter pin but even an impact wrench won't budge the nut. Do I have to remove the four bolts around that large nut first. And even if I get the drum off is the oil seal accessible without removing parking brake band assembly? Thanks.

The good news: The drum comes off with the yoke, don't disassemble it.

The bad news: You can't replace the seal without pulling the yoke, so the castle nut has to come off.

Truck in 1st gear. brake set, big breaker bar on socket.

Okie, I'll give it another try in the AM, thanks. Btw, mine has no driveshaft yoke on the drum. There is a separate driveshaft output shaft. Saw a pix of a driveshaft yoke off the parking drum. Can anyone out there if there is a difference in model years of M-37s ?

Thanks Jess. Finally got that nut off. Didn't have enough strength to do it with the breaker bar and impact wrench wouldn't budge it either. Finally cranked up my compressor past the limit of 135# and it came off just as my hose at the compressor burst ! Hey, its off and the hose can be fixed. Thanks for the links. They helped as one provided the Redi-Sleeve number I;m gonna need to repair the little groove in my drum shaft. Seal was a bear to get out but it's do able even with parking brake bands in the way. Thanks again.
