Hi Guys,

I've been thinking of how to paint with stencils (door and hood stars, hood numbers, etc) without screwing it up. When I've painted with stencils there's always one side or tip of a star that ends up with a little overspray shooting out......and I've been thinking of how to prevent that. Currently I've cut small holes along the edge of the stencil in question and then used masking tape over the holes to attach the stencil to the door. But that doesn't always work.....there has to be a better way...........and there is.

Thanks to the latest edition of Army Motors/Supply Line in the tips section.......I don't know why I didn't think of this. Ok, I know, but no one likes to call themselves stupid.
For those of you who don't get the MVPA mag.....shame on you.....just kidding........but here's the tip. Use magnets!! They mention refrigerator magnets, but any cheap magnets that will hold the stencil to the metal underneath it will work. What a great idea! You can place them all along the very edge of the stencil and it should work perfectly.

For those of you who've been doing this for years..........no laughing. And you should have shared.

Another tip for solving the same problem is 2 sided adhesive tape, eliminates the under spray.

Or make them out of contact paper so they stick a bit to begin with....

I use some glue stick applied to the back of the stencils I make to hold them tight to the body.

Contact paper, even shelf liner will work as well. I might try the magnetic strips, work has them as we replace door gaskets all the time.

I did share this 7 years ago (2007) on the G503 when some one asked how I prevented over spray on my hood numbers & Star. I replied with "magnets". At that time I was not a MVPA member and didn't know about TECH Talk. If I did I would have submitted my idea. See link below.

Actually if you are using a stencil you should use a stencil brush this will eliminate the blow out or over spray. Then again if you want to give a real GI look to your truck hold the stencil up to the truck and spray away. A few runs and over spray look just about right.

I put a pair of surgical type gloves on and I just push the stencil down as I'm spraying.
