I took my truck to the carwash today to use their engine degreaser setting on the engine and undercarriage. I like to leave the petrochemical residues there as opposed to my driveway. A few minutes later, I noticed that one side of my bed seemed to still be draining. It turns out the Fire Dept I bought the truck from had put some epoxy over the holes on the tank and I had blown it off with the pressure washer. I got the first pinhole plugged with some fire putty (our electrical shop was near) and made it home. I tried to clean it up a little, and the next thing I knew 8 holes were flowing gas onto the ground. I drained it down, but I think I need a replacement tank. My tank is pretty dented, and I don't know if it is rust or some damage which caused the leak, but I'd like a better tank. Does anyone know of a good one, or a vendor who might have one? Or any modern tanks which fit the truck well.

shame you're not in New England as I've got a spare, but apparently the S10 tanks work with almost no modification. I think just a little adjustment to the straps and you're good to go. Search through here for S10 tank and a few threads should pop up

Thanks tbone. I did see mention of S10 tanks being used. I was not sure how well they fit since I think I read they are in the sub 20 gallon range. I will have to look into them. My truck is a driver, not an original show truck so function and low price are my goals.

the s10 blazers had 20 gallon tanks and from what I hear you just have to adjust for a slightly different fill location and they should drop right in. Hard to argue for $80 from LMC

im running a S10 tank. used two longer bolts on the straps and a longer piece of hose for the filler neck. I have not hooked up the gauge, the idea of running twice the amount of juice to the rheostat submerged in gas is disconcerting.
I have had a few leaks over the years at the filler neck. the s10 neck is short and points up a bit. to get the hose to fit tight to the tank it has to be cut on a slight angle(dont use the hose with wire in it) .also use a high quality clamp a little tree rub on the filler neck can pull the hose off the tank

I have not had a chance to drop my tank, but for the most part it seems pretty solid. The problem area is the front left corner, and it seems like there is a downward facing dent which has multiple holes in about a one inch diameter area. Has anyone tried a liner like Damon Red Coat or any other coating? If I could get this fixed in an afternoon and the coating would last five years, I would do it. That would give me time to hunt down a better tank or modify a newer tank at my leisure.

Would there be any problem using a plastic tank such as not being able to alter it? Would the sender unit be under the bed access hole? Is there a grounding issue for the sender unit?

that's the right tank, no idea about the other questions, but with the sender you just run a grounding strap to the frame, so nbd there, and not sure where the senders end up as far as being under the access hole in the bed, but that's the right one. LMC Truck has the same tank for $99 btw.

I would expect that you could alter it with plastic welding techniques.

For you guys with S10 tanks, Did you need to cut any holes in the bed. I found this article online http://www.fourwheeler.com/project-vehi ... to-04.html and on photo 6 of 16 (scroll on the right arrow) someone is cutting a hole in their bed. My truck has the fuel pump on the crossmember I believe, so it is not in the tank.

Are there any issues with the filler neck? Weird angles or diameter changes?

Does the stock Dodge sending unit fit, or do I need to hunt down a 24V unit that fits

Any good sources of the Phillips head screws used on the bed in areas like the tanks cover plate and the filler tube cover? Mine are in pretty bad shape, with vice grips needing to be used on many of them to get them out

Thanks Bert. I went on his site and found them. I wish he'd make an index of his parts so one doesn't have to sort through 12 pages of parts. It can get pricey when you realize you could use this part, and that part also!
