I have a 53 with the 230 engine some one along its life switched it to 6 volt with a 6 volt starter.I turned it to 12 volt,I left in the 6 volt starter which has worked fine ,but lately it has been grinding the flywheel ,my question is .if I can find a new flywheel, and is it the original one that had the 24 volt system?.it has 146 teeth and is 5/16 wide,is that the original ,it works with a 6 volt starter, any help would be appreciated.jack

Yes, they are available-I got one from VPW a few years back-146 tooth, 8-hole military thickness flywheel. They also have starters of numerous types and should be able to help you out.

Jack:
I'm assuming that if that setup has worked fine for you and If the ring gear on the fly wheel is messed up,
you could just remove the ring gear and turn it around and get a few more miles out of it. Just heat the ring
gear and flip it around. I flipped mine; works great. If the starter gearing is messed up, that's another problem.
