I am putting in a PTO and there are 3 studs already on the PTO which i am going to reuse so can I just get bolts of the same size from the hardware store for the other 3 ????
and I have the top cover off will it fit without pulling the trany? if I need to do that how hard is it to Rand R the tranny

A PTO can be installed without pulling the trans, BUT it is a tight fit and you will very likely need to install and remove it several times to get the correct shim pack for proper gear tooth backlash. I'd rather pull the trans, install the PTO on the bench and reinstall the trans with the PTO already mounted. Way less trouble, and frustration. You will need to remove the side cover from the trans case opposite the PTO in order to check for proper backlash clearance. Have an ample supply of shims of various thickness on hand before you start, and it will be far superior if you get the correct length studs to do the installation correctly. They are available at any reputable auto parts outlet.

Hi Charles,

What are the specs on the studs? Or part numbers of the ones that you recommend.

Thank you in advance,

Bert

They should be grade 8, 3/8" course thread on 1 end, fine on the other. Don't recall the exact length, PTO cases usually have 1 thick hole which requires 1 stud to be longer than the other 5, however some early housings do not have the thick area. On these housings, all 6 studs are the same length.
