Hi everyone,

I have an original 230 engine and transmission out of my 1963 M37. It has the newer electrical system. The motor ran when I removed it but upon further inspection I realized that the 1 and 6 cylinders were scored fairly badly and will need sleeved/rebuilt. We assume that gasoline had got into the oil. Since I've never had to buy this engine i don't really know what its value is. Ideally I'd like to sale the Engine and transmission together. Ebay has the engine alone for sale for $1500. Since everyone here has been so helpful I plan on offering it here first. Any guidance or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well, in my opinion, $1500 is way too much and Ebay people are often living on Fantasy Island. I turned down one for less than a third of that a few months ago cause I don't have anywhere to store it. You are being honest in your description which is great. Others will chime in and you may get an offer via PM...where is the engine located (what state)?

I'm about thirty miles South of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I really like the MV family and definitely don't want to put some gawdy price on it nor mislead anyone. More details can always be given to interested parties. Thanks for the feedback

I'd suggest a search in Swap Meet on this site. There have been a number of engines listed and they might give you an idea of value. I have a sleeping 251CDN, complete from fan to trans output, all 24v still and am thinking of $650 or so when I sell it.

I'd have to agree with Refit on this one......don't go by the prices you see on Ebay. That motor listed for $1500 has been relisted a million times.....because he's nuts if he thinks anyone will pay anywhere near that for an M37 motor. At Aberdeen this year there was a good running (claimed, but I know the guy so I believe him) motor for $500....and he would have talked.....but it didn't sell. I've run across them for much less.........even free if I'd haul it away.......but just didn't need one or have the space. Seems there's lots of M37 motors out there....just not when you need one, which is always the case.

So put a post in the Swap Meet section........or try Ebay (but don't get your hopes up). Another alternative is Craigslist. I've found it's pretty good for this kind of stuff.

I sold my 251 and T98 for 500 bucks a few years ago, just to be rid of it. The key is to find a desperate buyer who needs an engine yesterday for the activity he's going to tonight... That person will pay whatever you want...

Ray is right on the money with value. If I had to sell my stuff quickly, it would probably be given away for scrap value. Unless an engine is a known good runner, its only value is as a core. Complete rebuilds can run well over $1000 in parts alone, if not more. I just had a Case 188D done top to bottom for over $2K, but I needed or the machine was junk. I have traded or given away for future consideration lots of bits. Ebay values are often unrealistic but we all dream... If you really want the part, then price is only one consideration.

I offered my engine on the Power Wagon Forum for free with no takers. Took the engine apart and sold the parts separately.

There's a 251 cu in engine and matching transmission for a CDN M37 a few km from my place. Been for sale since last fall. Asking price is $300. The engine was running until last summer when the owner replaced it with a small GM V8 and transmission. A parts M37 could be added to the deal for a few dollars more.

That sounds like a good deal even if it needs a little work!
