fuel gauge question

My M37 didn't have a fuel tank when I bought it and I've installed a S10 tank and a new stock M37 sending unit. I checked the unit before installing it by hooking it up and moving the float up & down and all was good. Because of the oration of the unit to have clear movement of the float I had to splice the wire to make it longer, now the gauge doesn't work. Any ideas on what has gone wrong. I'm thinking its because of the splice but don't see how.

You might try checking the ground contact to be sure you have a complete circuit, a couple of clips on each end of a length of wire connected to a known good ground has worked for me when checking out such problems. If that does not help at least that part of the mystery is eliminated allowing you to turn your attention elsewhere.

thanks guys, I do know that when I checked it out before installing I had to run a ground wire so I'll start by adding a known good ground.
