Let's Talk Water Pumps.......

Hi Guys,

The other day as I was continuing my memorization of the ORD 9 (just kidding) and I saw that the water pump had a grease fitting for the bearing. I went out an hour or so ago and checked mine........no grease fitting, just a blank undrilled pad in the casting. So does that mean my pump is aftermarket.......or did the Army switch to a sealed bearing design later in the game? It does say "Made in USA" on it, but they probably all did.

thanks,
bob

Well Bob That is a good Question. I know I re installed with the grease fitting. I do have both types. I'll watch to find out the answer.

Bob,

I think the ones with the zerk fitting or grease cup are left over parts from WW2 era and as production methods improved they used the sealed bearing style pumps.
I also believe that by doing this they would solve the problem of someone pumping too much grease in and blowing out the seal prematurely.

The other day as I was continuing my memorization of the ORD 9 (just kidding) Also you shouldn't kid around about stuff like this, there will be a test later on.

The water pump that came on my 1952 M-37 had a zerk fitting to grease it. I remember thinking that was really weird.

Bob,

This is pretty straight forward, since they don't make Yugo's any more................you will have to drive a Purple Prius in the slow lane with the hazard flashers on.

My 1962 M37 had a pump with a zerk on it.

I'll bet John @ Midwest could tell us what was original.

That's pretty rough Bert.....pretty rough. :D

DJ.....I'm sure he could, but I hate bothering John when I'm not ordering. I think he keeps pretty busy and although he likes to help us out I tend to think he'd rather not be bothered with questions if possible. He monitors this forum from time to time so I figure if he has time he'll chime in. I'm saying this without really knowing John, I've only ordered from him a time or four and read his replies on here..........so I don't actually know what I'm talking about (as usual)....just summizing. I guess I could make a list of questions and the next time I make an order I could pick his brain. :D

thanks,
bob

The ORD 9 dated December 1954 shows the zerk..........but what happened after that I don't know. But I think that says the zerk was used at least on the early M's.

Do the new reproduction water pumps have the zerk?

thanks,
bob

If know one posts by then, I will take a pic and post. I have always known it to be the original set up. Filled with GAA and give it a turn every now and again.
