Help with MG Feed Tray - How it Works

Hi Guys,

I have aspirations one day of building an M24A3 gun mount for my M. Probably just the mount and M23cradle, as even a non-firing M2HB costs more than a few good M37s......but knowing that I want to install a mount I started looking around for pieces and found a good source for cheap NOS feed trays for the 30 and 50 cal MGs (if interested let me know and I'll tell you where to get them). My problem is I don't understand what the two piece spring loaded arm thingy is supposed to do (see pic below). Only thing I can guess is it squashes the ammo belt down to keep it from rattling itself out of the can????? I looked on Google, but to no avail, but didn't see any of the other types of ammo box trays with such an arm thingy. So I have no idea.....can someone enlighten me please????

thanks,
bob

Bob,

You guessed it correctly, it keeps the belted ammo in the can.

Cross country travel "off road" will shake the belt out in no time at all.
