Cheap Repaint.....And I Mean CHEAP!!

Well.......my folks are coming to visit any weekend now and I really didnt' want to hear them asking what I needed an old beat up Army truck sitting in the driveway for. You know how Mom's can be. So....off to Walmart for 10 cans of Rustoleum Camoflage Deep Forest Green spray paint......and $40 later I have a newly painted M. Took about a day and a half and on one got hurt. Check out my pics in the Gallery under Biob Brucato.....you can see the before and after. How cool are Military vehicles when you an spend a day and $40 and get a decent paintjob!

Now I'm not trying to kid anyone.........this is a "ten footer" for sure. Maybe twenty...depends how big your feet are. But my primary goal (other than the folks, was preservation rather than restoration. I'll paint the rims this week after work and start putting the correct front bumper on. But for now it keeps all the neighbors from asking "what is that??". They can now plainly see.......it's an ARMY Truck!!

later,
bob

It's amazing what a little paint will do. You not the first guy to rattle can paint their truck and you won't be the last. Good for you. I'm sure someone will criticize because it's not how they would do it, but don't worry about it. The truck looks good, the paint job is accomblishing what you wanted to do. Enjoy your truck!

WOW!!! THAT IS SOME TRANSFORMATION!!! WHEN YOU WILL PAINT THE RIMS, DO THE AXLES AND INNER FENDERS TOO. DASHBOARD PERHAPS? THROW A WASH ON THOSE TIRES AND USE SOME BLACK SHOE POLISH ON THEIR SIDES. MAYBE A MINWAX POLYURETHANE COAT ON THE WOODWORK? I AM SURE YOUR BELOVED FAMILY WILL APPROVE OF HOW NICE IT LOOKS ALREADY!!! :D P.S. GET RID OF THE RUSTY STUFF IN THE BED IF YOU DIDN'T ALREADY. DOESN'T LOOK NICE IN THERE FOR A FIRST IMPRESSION.

I went to a big car show recently, and there was a Corvette with a rattle can paint job. You could not tell the difference.

Randolph 24087 that I got thru Peter Debella Jeep Parts. Accurate for Nam era stuff. He has both gallons and rattle cans. The rattle cans are hard to master as the paint is semi-gloss. The color looks good no matter what, but getting an even semi gloss finish takes some practice. I'm seeing that rattle can paint jobs aren't quite as tough as gun applied, I think that is because when you mix the paint for the gun you usually add some hardener.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the kind words. SOVTEN....I hear ya, but my problem would be that if I took it much further and made it look better I'd start procrastinating about taking it apart to restore it. So I'll paint the rims and put a top on it.....but then it's time to start ripping her apart for the restoration she deserves. Now if I can just get my pressure blaster back from my buddy I lent it to..................

WarrenD....no doubt about it....rattle can paint isn't nearly as durable as gun applied paint due to the catalyzed hardener you mix it up with. Normal gloss Rustoleum is pretty stout stuff these days, but their flat paint (like I used) will scratch if you just touch it. Definitely NOT a long term solution.

regards,
bob

Same color, and method as mine, I just did it one part at a time over the build process.
