Hello wiring diagram bookworms, And I do recall some bantor about the installation of an alternator from an M35, and that it would fit the M37, but the question is: Are M35 alternators available as a waterproof unit? Can it be incorporated using the 24 volt spaceship cables?

The Military 24v 60amp alt will fit all M-series vehicles and is water proof. There are 2 cables and one wire running to/from it. You have a ground cable to frame, then you have a positive cable that you run to the batt side of the starter relay., then you have your exciter ( for lack of better word ) wire that you run from your on/off switch, Your done.
The ( single groove) pulley off your generator will fit on the 60amp alt.

does anyone have a good source for these alternators and an idea of their cost? Thanks.

Most dealers carry a conversion kit that allows you to switch from the generator to alternator with no problem. I have seen the alternators around but I got mine from Parramore in Florida. Seem to recall it was a used one that cost about 100 bucks plus shipping.

hey there! So I take it I'd need the conversion kit in addition to the actual alternator? I'll check Parramore. Thanks.

You don't need the kit, just makes it easier. I cn try scanning the instructions

Conversion kit runs about $30 from the dealers and has all the cables made so all you have to do is take off your generator and regulator and swap in the alternator and exchange the cables. Not hard at all the modifiy your existing housing and fit everything, but from a time/money standpoint the kits are worth looking into.

I paid closer to $200 for an alternator last year at Aberdeen, but it was nice and new, and I had a M35A2C that fried it's alternator on the trip up and I really wanted to be able to run the lights on the way home...

I did not use a conversion kit, all I remember doing when I installed my 60amp ( along with a NOS front wire harness) was what I posted previously and from there I also had to run a additional 12ga wire ( .50cents) from the batt side of the relay to provide power to the on/off switch but its been a few years

Well then, it sounds like it can be done. Didn't hear anybody refering to the space ship cables , though...Sounds like all your references to adaption are using bare wire? What happened to the waterproof featrure?

The 60amp alt doesn't have/need "spaceship cables" just the 2 rubber coated cables and 1 wire w/waterproof connector coming out of the waterproof unit itself. heres a picture of the one on my 37 to help you out.

That was the engine I rebuilt and put in my 37 when I rebuilt it ( click below ), shes long gone but I did go visit her last year.
