Well with temps in the mid 20s I buried myself in the cave with my heater and buttoned up the PTO travel lock, lever, boot, and reinstalled the floorboard today, making sure the travel lock was properly aligned so the PTO position was in "neutral". For safety purposes I didn't install the front shear pin (as I need to get a couple). I was not going to use the nut and bolt that was in use before I gained ownership of the PTO/winch.

For those of you new to the winch side of things-do NOT use nuts and bolts on your PTO drive shaft-shear pins are made specifically to break before one overloads the Winch/PTO, thus avoiding serious damage. Nuts and bolts defeat this purpose.

Still need a boot for the tranny shifter, huh?

I was thumbing thru my TM yesterday looking for distributor vent line routing and this picture made me take a second look. I remembered the PTO Handle picture you posted had the handle extension on the operator side and the TM had it's on the other side. I'm not sure how much this matters but I thought I would post this.

About that shear pin; I've seen bearing retainers ripped completely out when shear pins were used, have seen grade 5 bolts break and prevent damage. Using a grade 2 bolt is fine, they will shear readily, sooner than a shear pin will. I don't recommend grade 5's, pushing your luck there.

Hi Charles-hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Thanks for posting that photo, too. I installed the handle "as received" when I got the PTO. After seeing your post I checked my 9-8030 manual and sure enough, I have the handle installed on the wrong side! Many thanks for pointing this out-I appreciate it (and will fix this tomorrow)! While I'm far from doing a frame-off resto, I try to keep the details "as military" as I can when items such as this one are "in view".

Thanks also for the info about shear pins-I couldn't bring myself to use a nut and bolt except in an emergency but your counsel regarding their use is again, most appreciated.
